Originally built in the eighth century, the castle is among the oldest in Belgium. It was certainly already complete by 988 AD. Its most famous resident was Godfrey of Bouillon, leader of the First Crusade in 1096. It was used for military purposes until 1830. Every day from 1 March to 11 November, plus every weekend and public holiday, plus during the Christmas and Spring half-term school holidays, a mediaeval-style falconry show is held at the castle, featuring birds of prey such as buzzards, eagles, owls and vultures.
