The poet Paul Verlaine stayed there in the 1880s when he came to visit his childhood friend Father Dewez. The fact that the house lays on the banks on the stream which marks the border between France and Belgium meant he could slip back into France easily (he had been forbidden to stay in Belgium after attacking Arthur Rimbaud).
