The French and German cemetry "Orée de la Forêt" (1917)

In the woods of Rossignol, there are two French military cemeteries that gather bodies of soldiers who died during the Battle of the borders which opposed the French army to the German one in August 1914. This cemetery has about 2500 soldiers among which the famous French writer Ernest PsichariIn 1917, the German soldiers decided to create military cemeteries to gather the bodies of thousands of French and German soldiers who died during the battle of Rossignol on August 22 1914.

So, there are three cemeteries in Rossignol among which the cemetery "l'Orée de la Forêt" 635 soldiers are burried in it: 408 French soldiers and 227 German soldiers. The necropolis was conceived as some kind of natural cathedral. The trees symbolized columns sustaining the leafed vaults of the naves. These trees have disappeared after a storm in 1989.

After the war, several French families have rapatried the bodies of their parents in their native towns and the German bodie shave been gathered in one only cemetery, in Saint-Vincent. The cemetery also hosts two ossuaries that gather 2379 unknown French soldiers coming from some others small cemeteries in the area
